As schools shift to Google Apps, blind students object

Universities increasingly outsource e-mail and other services to companies like Google—but if Google's software isn't usable by all students, are the schools breaking the law?

The National Federation of the Blind (NFB), the largest and oldest nationwide organization for those with blindness, has filed a complaint with the Department of Justice alleging that New York University, Northwestern University, and certain Oregon public schools are violating the Americans with Disabilities Act. The complaints, sent March 15, call upon the DOJ to investigate the schools’ use of Google’s education software, and they include videos describing the accessibility problems.

REPORT: Facebook Profiles Are Now Part Of 80% Colleges’ Admissions Outreach

Recruiters aren’t the only ones looking at candidates’ Facebook profiles. Four out of every five college admissions offices use the social network to recruit students.

That statistic comes from Kaplan Test Prep’s 2010 survey of college admissions officers. And like the company’s Senior Communication Manager Russell Schaffer clarified in an email, “we found that 82 percent of admissions officers reported that their school is using Facebook to recruit students.”

On buses equipped with Wi-Fi in Vail, Ariz., officials say more homework is getting done, and there's less rowdy behavior.

This is an interesting experiment - I never had to endure the daily bus ride. I had friends that would spend an hour on the bus both morning and evening. Providing something useful to the students will benefit everyone in the long run. It sounds like, from these examples at least that it has possibilities.
